Introduction

When Angostura Ltd. decided to develop Golden Grove and Buccoo Estates in Tobago, we knew that we must find ways to improve the quality of the natural environment and develop sustainable solutions that would permanently reverse the negative effects of prior development and mismanagement. Otherwise, we would not receive permits to exploit opportunities that the property offered. With this in mind, our company assembled a team of talented consultants to devise a plan for the 272 hectare (673 acre) resort development. They not only had to address the new effects of proposed developments but also deal with the waste generated by existing communities in the watershed area.

The stated objective was:

"That the development would be considered the best Caribbean example where the needs of the natural environment were integrated into that of the built development and which fostered a relationship between both, that would sustain and nurture the habitat indefinitely"
